Colossi of Memnon

The two Colossi of Memnon statues represent Pharaoh Amenhotep III (c1390 – 1352 BC). They are 18 metres tall and are each cut from a single piece of stone. They weight about 1000 tonnes each and are usually the first thing you see on a tour of the West Bank in Luxor聽in Egypt. They are located at the eastern entrance to the funerary temple of Amenophis III, which is currently under excavation. The reason why they are dedicated to Memnon is due to this being a tourist attraction in the Graeco-Roman era. Statues were attributed to Memnon, the African king who was killed by Achilles in the Trojan War.聽
