It's a fairly fast paced story about future war. Most characters are believable and fit in with todays politics, which will never change as long as there's humans. Mostly it's about the hunters and their greed being subdued by idealistic military establishment. Same theme as all war books. What makes this better than most is the story line and the fact the writer did an excellent job of writing it and retaining human fears and moments of happiness at their achievements. Did we win? Of course not, that's why there's book 2. They did win the first battle though, or did they?

The book is fast paced and filled with action. The main characters come with strength and weaknesses that make them believable.

There is one issue however, which ruined the story to me:
On the one hand the characters act independendly, as if they were cut off from communication with their headquarters, on the other there are live conversations across vast distances.
Such a capability should invoke at least some form of communication and orders from upstairs.

"A true warrior, like tea, shows his strength in hot water." Sleepy space Station 43 barely had time to register that they were under attack before they were totally obliterated. Not even time to send a distress signal.
Then it was the turn of Friendship Station, constructed to demonstrate the alliance between former enemies of the US - Sino world war of twenty years before. But memories run deep and Admiral, former Captain, Mattis doesn't trust these new 'friends'. Yet if anyone is to survive they must all work together...

This is a marvellous book, peopled with very real characters, well written and constructed, with tension building from the very first page. Who are these unknown attackers? Are they from a secret earth conspiracy, or are they truly alien? And what is the secret being concealed by the pompous Senator Pitt? A glorious little mystery wrapped up within the fierce battle for survival of the few ships able to make a stand against the powerful destroyers with their different technologies. How many must die in the possibly futile attempt to save humanity's​ home?

I received a prepublication copy of this book as a gift from the author for which i am really grateful. I am an enormous fan of science fiction books and read a lot, many of them excellent. But i rate this, The Last War, as one of the best of it's type that i have read. The first in a trilogy, i am now eagerly awaiting the next in the series. My thanks again to the author for the enjoyment this book has given to me. Highly recommended.

Very hard to put down. I really enjoyed Admiral Mattis's character. Enjoyed the regular banter and related historical events referred to. Can't wait for book 2

Well, it's a fast paced space opera with lots of action, but the storytelling is a little rough around the edges. Characters are stereotypical or even one dimensional, slightly exaggerated and there are gaps in the flow of the story, making it a little less realistic than it should and could be.

Still, an overall very good read. Will be waiting for the next books to come.
